专业特点：
什么是TESOL？TESOL是“Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages” 的缩写,中文翻译是“对外英语教学”。这个专业是英语语言学与教育学/教学法的结合，在国外大学里大多将这个专业设置在语言学院或者教育学院。主要是针对母语是非英语国家的人的英语教育。由于TESOL的教学对象是“对外”，所以其教学方法不仅在于对英语本身的教育，特别考虑到学习者的母语和文化背景。
在此要强调，大家在了解这个专业的时候可能也看到了TEFL专业，那在此我也介绍一下，TEFL是指Teaching English as a Foreign Language(作为外语的英语教学)，目前基本上tesol、tefl和tesl证书都已经被混用了，三者没有被严格的区别，都被作为外教资格证来看待。所以大家在选择专业时，也不用太强调这其中的区别了。
那TESOL专业到底要学些什么呢？我用各国大学的专业课程设置来为大家做个简单的对比。

就业形势：
由于TESOL专业有非常强的专业性，所以就业时也相对比较有目的性。在国外的话，由于各国都有专门强化国际学生英语的ESL/EFL课程，或单独的语言学校，亦或是大学的语言中心，那TESOL专业的毕业生都可以选择这些机构任教。如果回到中国，那当然是一片更广阔的天地，学生可以选择去各大中小学做英语老师，或者去专门的语言培训学校任教。也有些人进入出版社，成为TESOL教材的编辑等。部分学生选择继续进修博士学位，当然这部分人时少数的。
录取标准：
那同学们需要具备什么条件才能有机会出国进修这个专业呢？通常TESOL项目的录取要求侧重在英语水平上，往往对雅思或者托福有比较高的要求。
美国TOP100的大学都要求托福100分以上，雅思7分，不要求GRE成绩；个别托福要求低一点，80分的，则一般需要提供GRE成绩。个别学校GMAT成绩也可以接受。其他大部分学校要求托福80-100之间，若雅思则为6.5或7.0分。学生GPA一般需要3.0以上。美国的TESOL专业欢迎各种学术背景的同学申请，一般也不需要提供教学经验。学生条件优秀者也比较容易申请到奖学金。
澳大利亚大学的TESOL专业一般对大学平均分会有弱化，基本上211大学70-75分，非211大学80分以上，就可以申请到八大名校（G8）了。至于雅思分数，一般要求都是6.5（6），莫纳什大学和西澳大学要求7.0分。澳洲大学的TESOL专业一般要求最好有工作经验，或者提供教师资格证也可以。
英国的TESOL专业一般对语言类大学更具倾向性，当然师范类大学的学生也很受欢迎。一般要求大学平均分80分左右，雅思要求为6.5（6），个别学校要求7分。很多专业要求有相关的教学工作经验，当然教师资格证也可以起到一定的辅助作用。
加拿大大学的TESOL专业在大学的课程中开设较少，但对于申请学生的条件要求相对严格，必须为相关专业背景，并且建议有一定的工作经验，语言要求非常高，最低的要求为托福92分，最高的要求雅思8分。
